2016-07-28 10:57Journalists, civil society groups and the ruling ANC party have gone head to head with South Africa’s public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), since May, when the broadcaster announced that it would no longer air footage of the destruction of public property during protests. 2016-07-27 11:21Colombia’s constitutional court is moving ahead with a national referendum on a peace deal with FARC rebels, one month after the two sides signed a landmark ceasefire agreement in Havana. The country hopes the ceasefire will end half a century of discord, and move towards a deal that would see the disarmament and demobilization of rebels, and more regional stability. For journalists reporting in FARC-controlled regions, the ceasefire also offers hope of increased safety and an end to media censorship. Read more ... -
2016-07-20 13:44WAN-IFRA’s Strengthening Media and Society programme arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to deliver three days of workshop training, professional networking and press freedom advocacy as part of the Foreign Ministry of Denmark-funded two-year global initiative. 36 media professionals representing 23 media companies from across Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines participated in training sessions and exchanged professional best practice on innovation, digital strategies, editorial leadership and media freedom challenges. 2016-06-22 15:54In 2016, WAN-IFRA combined its Sida-funded Women in News Africa programme with its Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs-funded programme to bring participants together for combined workshops in media management as well as peer mentoring, and networking events. The group of 45 high potential editors and journalists from Botswana, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe (Sida-sponsored delegates) and Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania (Norwegian-sponsored delegates) met on two occasions throughout 2016.
