Matthew Eltringham

Editor of the BBC College of Journalism website, UK

Matthew Eltringham joined the College of Journalism in May as Head of the website and events operation after spending more than 16 years working in the heart of the BBC’s network news operation.
Matthew's career has – so far – spanned Radio Five Live, The World Tonight, Westminster politics, Breakfast with Frost and the BBC News website. In the last few years he has been leading the BBC’s involvement in user generated content and social media.

In the spring of 2005, he was the founding editor of the UGC Hub – a team of BBC journalists who pioneered the incorporation of user generated content by mainstream media in their journalism.
The Hub was one of the first teams within BBC News that operated in a multi-platform way – although based on the News website, we worked closely with TV, radio and the web. The team has covered every single major national and international story since it’s inception at the time of the July 7, 2005 London bomb attacks, developing industry leading expertise in the use of UGC. In the summer of 2007 the team won an RTS award for its innovative work in covering the floods that hit the UK.

In June 2010 he devised and led a substantial College of Journalism programme to drive the use of social media by BBC journalists as a vital tool in their daily work.
